JD is the ‘Boy on the Rope’, the last person to touch the Spher’rios holiday-sphere before it and all those aboard were shot into oblivion. The tragic image of JD scrabbling against escaping air, and gravity, is the emblem of the disaster. An image treated with reverence by those who remember. But it’s ten years since the disaster, memories fade, and now to rub salt into those memories, a nightclub, ‘Club 5 Eight Zero 6’, has adopted the neon outline of the ‘boy on the rope’ for its banner.
Lucy wants to mindMerge with JD, but he’s not interested. He could lock into her thoughts with no effort, his telepathy is a thousand of times more powerful than hers. This boy can weaponise his thoughts, and his fellow cadets know to keep him at arm’s length. He isn’t interested in linking, he just sits there staring up at the stars.
Lucy, though, won’t be beaten. She is the prettiest girl on campus, she could have her pick of her many admirers, but she wants to mindLink with JD. [-” A little bit of coaxing,”-] she thinks, [-“one more try.”-]
But is Lucy just poking a sleeping tiger?
